Alternative names for this suit include Rods, Batons, Staves, Sticks and Clubs./ The suit of Wands is associated with the
element of Fire. According to the Golden Dawn system, which many people follow, fire is the first in the progression of the
elements. Fire represents pure energy, just as earth represents pure matter, and the characteristics that it brings to the
suit of Wands are mostly as you would expect: passion, activity, effort vitality, raw power, ambition, and so on. The characteristics
which the elemental fire brings to the suit of Wands can be studied further in the nature of the astrological Fire signs:
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
The suit of Wands is described as being a masculine suit, and one may note the phallic imagery of the wand itself. One
should be careful, however, of associating this with the character of men. The masculine here is the divine masculine, akin
to the oriental concept of yand; it is the prima causa (first cause) and the principle of expansion, action and will.
On a mundane level the suit of wands is often associated with work or sports or other things which require substantial
effort. It is also associated with expansion and growth: it should be remembered that wands are made from trees and are the
only suit which is regularly depicted with living elements of the natural world, i.e. leaves. Energy creates movement and
movement is travel, and so the suit of wands is also associated with travel, as well as with the movevment of information
in all kind of communication. Given the associations with work and with ambition it should be no surprise that negotiations
are particularly emphasised. And just as fire consumes all that is in its path, so too can the characteristics of this suit
be all consuming, and its energy can be highly infectious. In general it is a very outward looking and extroverted energy.
